Chang-Yoon Jeong, the second Chairman of the Korea Photonics Convergence Technology Research Association and CEO of OptoNest, stated that photonics convergence technology has become a key strategic technology driving future industries, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, healthcare, aerospace, and defense. Building on the photonics industry ecosystem established in Gwangju over the past three decades, he emphasized expanding collaboration among industry, academia, research institutes, and government in emerging fields such as optical interconnects and photonic semiconductors.
Chairman Jeong explained that the association, originally founded in 2005, has been relaunched to play a more active role in fostering collaboration. It will regularly organize networking events, identify national R&D opportunities, promote technology and market information exchange, propose government policies, and support commercialization to strengthen Korea's photonics industry ecosystem.
Since 2009, Jeong has led OptoNest, a manufacturer specializing in specialty optical fibers and medical fiber lasers. Drawing on decades of experience in optical communications and photonics, he aims to connect R&D, demonstration, and commercialization of photonic semiconductor technologies while expanding their applications in AI data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and defense.
He concluded by emphasizing that the competitiveness of Korea's strategic industries—including semiconductors, AI, and defense—depends on advanced photonics technologies, and called for continued government support and investment to accelerate the growth of the photonics convergence industry.
